“In autumn, the evenings are most moving…” So wrote Sei Shōnagon in The Pillow Book a thousand years ago. Her tender eye for sunset, birds in flight, and the hush of the wind still speaks to us today—and even echoes in American poetry. |

Offered as part of the ongoing sumi-e workshop series at the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California (JCCCNC), Sumi-e Brush Painting Autumn Workshop: Chrysanthemum is the third session in a yearlong series themed around the Four Gentlemen—orchid, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and plum. This two-hour workshop serves as an introduction to Japanese ink painting (sumi-e), focusing on cultivating the essential mindset and learning fundamental brush techniques. Participants will explore the expressive beauty of the chrysanthemum—an autumn motif symbolizing elegance and perseverance—while experiencing the meditative spirit and harmony of ink, brush, and paper.
